Girls Love Halo Interview with Nicole

It’s time for another Interview. I’m proud to present to you the one and only Mrs. Princess.Chief aka Nicole. She is a major Halo fan since she was 7 years old so she knows her way around. Without further ado, let’s head right into the fun.

1.) When did you start playing Halo?

I started playing Halo during the year the first one came out which was when I was 7 years old. I remember watching my dad play it first and whenever my dad would be at work, I would sneak on the Xbox and play Halo myself. It was the first time I experienced a first person shooter, playing through a hero’s point of view. I fell in love with Halo the moment the main menu started up. The Halo theme always brings me back.

2.) If you could choose to be one character of the Halo universe, who would you be?

I remember when I was obsessed of Halo Reach, I’ve always wanted to be Kat because I thought she was such a badass. I cried the most during her death in the game because I connected with her a lot. She’s incredibly intelligent and loyal to Noble team. Back in the day, my Xbox friends would nickname me Kat or Kitty Kat. Also, my multiplayer spartan looks similar to her and every time I would play SWAT, I used the M6G pistol since that’s her main weapon. Here’s an old screenshot of my Reach spartan from 5+ years ago.

3.) Do you have a favorite Halo quote?

This quote has been in my Xbox bio for months and it is: „Don’t make a girl a promise if you know you can’t keep it.“
Every time Cortana said that to Chief, it literally breaks my heart into a million pieces. It has always stuck with me for many reasons. When I met the voice actors of Master Chief and Cortana last year, I drew these for them.

4.) What do you love most about Halo?

2 words: Master Chief. Master Chief is literally what makes Halo.. Halo. And I have a pretty huge crush on him as a lot of people know. I experienced so much through his eyes and he is my top favorite videogame character of all time. His strength, bravery, and determination really inspires me. Every time I go to a convention and see a Master Chief cosplayer, I freak out and fangirl because I just really love the character. He’s been a huge part of my childhood. Master Chief has grown so much and what I love about the recent Halo games is that he’s starting to show more human emotion. I know that he’s more than just a machine.
Also, meeting Steve Downes and Jen Taylor has always been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl. So when I finally got the chance to meet them at SacAnime, it was one of the happiest days of my life. I even got Master Chief to say „I love you“ to me. Ahhhh. <3

Master Chief reveals his true feelings.

And lastly, the Halo community. They are all such sweethearts to me. We all love Halo and I have met such wonderful people at conventions I recently went to. I’m incredibly happy and proud to be a part of such a passionate community.

5.) What do you hate most about Halo?

I don’t like how Halo 5 multiplayer has very few game types to play on. I wish they came out with more playlists like in Halo Reach. But other than that, I hated how Bungie left the Halo series. It was heartbreaking and was an unreal moment for me as well as others when it happened. But my friends and I still made some great memories on the last Bungie Day (7/7/11).

6.) How would you rate your skills in Halo? (1-10)

I would have to say 7 if I don’t play a few practice matches but after a few practice matches, then I’m a 8 or 9. Haha. 😂 It all depends on how much I play before hand.

7.) What is your favorite Halo game?

My favorite is the one that is rarely anybody’s favorite which is Halo 4. The main reason is because of the connection between Master Chief and Cortana. The ending was just incredibly beautiful and I felt like they should’ve just ended the Halo series from there. Master Chief also had more dialogue and was starting to show human emotion which made me fall more in love with his character.
But I also love Halo Reach for the firefight and multiplayer. Many memories were made there with friends. That one is also my absolute favorite one.

8.) What do you prefer? Campaign or multiplayer?

If you see any of my stats on any Halo game, most of the hours spent are on campaign. Halo is one of the games in which I can play the campaign over and over again without getting tired of it. I love experiencing the legend of Master Chief, Noble Team, etc. as many times as I want. And turning on the skulls to make the campaign more interesting haha. But I also love multiplayer. I mostly play SWAT, infection, and firefight.

9.) Which games besides Halo do you play?

I play way too many games but I’ll just list a few of my favorites. BioShock, Assassin’s Creed, Kingdom Hearts, Pokémon, Fallout, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Castle Crashers, Minecraft, Destiny, Gears of War, Borderlands, Far Cry, and many more.

10.) If you had to endure one level of any Halo game in real life, which one would it be and why?

Probably the last level in Halo 3 where you ride in a Warthog and things are exploding everywhere. If I wasn’t the one driving and I was on the turret… I think that would be so freakin‘ fun and epic.

And here’s an updated picture of most of my Halo collection:

Thank you so much for interviewing me! 🙂

Thank you Nicole!

I love Halo 4

I know many people will disagree with my statement, let alone want to bash on me for saying such a stupid thing. But to be very honest, I don’t care. I love Halo 4. And I want to share why.

Halo 4 came out in a time when I just recently had made an Xbox Live account. Before, I had played all my games on my boyfriends profile. When I realized how much I enjoyed the sound of an achievement popping up, it was time to make my own profile and stop giving them to my boyfriend. I also discovered Instagram in 2012. That meant meeting a bunch of new friends and finding a new hobby.

With Xbox Live came the possibility to play multiplayer. And boy did I use that feature with Halo 4. I spent hours playing Slayer and Swat on Halo 4. It’s almost disturbing to me now, seeing that I have next to zero time to play any game at the moment. But anyways, I loved and still love the Halo 4 multiplayer. And since nearly everybody I know hates Halo 4, I had to ask myself why it is so different to me. Everybody loves a certain Halo the most. For me it’s CE and Halo 4. When I think about both of them, I have the fondest memories. And not only about the game, but about the people I played it with, the time and circumstances I was in, while playing them. With CE it’s the memory of first contact with a shooter, my blossoming love for Master Chief and the wonderful feeling of playing the campaign in split screen with my boyfriend. I remember our little apartment, being young and careless. And later on more memories are added when Halo: CE Anniversary came out and we played it again and again. Trying certain achievements over and over, listening to weird 80’s music while running through the Library or learning to grenade jump. All these memories make it the greatest game in the world for me.

For Halo 4 I have similar feelings. When I think about Halo 4 I immediately want to play it. When I hear certain music I immediately want to play it. My boyfriend and I played countless hours of Slayer while listening to Riff Raff, Wiz Khalifa, Iron Maiden or Slayer (haha, how appropriate). We played whole evenings and nights, falling to bed at 5 am with images of recent fights on our minds. And the campaign…yes everybody hates it too. I certainly don’t like everything about it. The missions are too repetitive. (If you think about it though, this argument is invalid considering Halo CE levels like The Library or Two Betrayals. Just saying.) What I really liked about Halo 4 were the cutscenes with Chief and Cortana. Dem feels! Or the epic scene with Chief, Cortana, Lasky, Lord Hood and Roland on the bridge of Infinity? The way Chief doesn’t take shit from dear Terrence? I love it!

Yeah the campaign isn’t perfect, but I had a lot of fun playing it.

Here are 3 things I like about the Halo 4 multiplayer:

  • You see the Spartans in your game before playing. See their armor and stance. It is a fun feature and I love stuff like this.
  • I love certain maps. My all time favorite map is Complex. It is perfect for Swat. I mean really perfect. Another fantastic map is Adrift. Slayer on Adrift is the best.
  • The weapons are exactly the way I want them. The DMR is my baby. The DMR in Halo 5 is eh.

So what else makes Halo 4 so great to me? I started taking screenshots on Halo 4. I had so much fun playing around with forge, always trying to get better and discovering a new effect. Before 343 fucked around with the file share it was so easy to take screenshots and discover the ones from other screenshot artists. Then I met Lily on Instagram and we started our screenshot account. I also met Sal, another dear friend from the States. He was into screenshots too and so we would all get together every now and then and have a lot of fun posing or just killing each other. I also remember custom games with people from the Halo community. Back then it was pretty common that a big group would get together and played new game types or maps. I had the best time during such nights.

So what Halo 4 is to me, to others, it might be Halo 2,  3 or Halo Reach. They have the fondest memories of those games. They have met their online friends in that time or maybe discovered taking screenshots back then.

What I am really trying to say is, a game can be great because it has a good campaign and the multiplayer runs smoothly, but what makes a game memorable, are the feelings that are connected to it.

I have only positive memories of Halo 4 and that is why I love this game. Amen.

Do you wanna play Halo?

Literally every time my boyfriend asks me if I wanna play Halo:

  • I’m so tired, but yes!
  • I just started this book, but yes!
  • I have to go to work in 10 minutes, but yes!
  • I’m hungry and we need to prepare food, but yes!
  • I should play my other games, but yes!
  • I’m in no good mood, so when the game is laggy I’ll cuss so loud the neighbors will hear it, but yes!

Halo 5 Screenshots

Today I want to share some of my new Screenshots. Two of them are made on a forged map but the others are just early ones from when Forge wasn’t released. I have to say I have had big problems with Forge so far. And it’s not the controls like you may think. My problem is that I can’t access my Forge maps in the theater. They just don’t show on either recently played or watch now. I have only been able to watch a gameplay on a forged map once. Hence the 2 Screenshots on Parallax. I don’t know if that was pure luck or something else. The clip didn’t show in recently played, but was available under watch. I find it extremely unnerving that theater isn’t working properly. I was so happy when Forge came out and it looks promising enough. But what good does that do when I can’t access my maps?

I’ll have to wait for the next patch I guess.

Equality – What Halo is doing right

Even in 2015 the debate about equality between men and women is not finished. While there have been changes for the better, we are still facing the reality of women being treated differently.

As a grown woman with a fair share of disappointing and hurtful experiences on this matter, I am all for women empowerment. But what does it mean? It means that females should be encouraged to be self-confident and brave. It also means that females should be paid the same as males when doing the same job. Females should be encouraged to build a career and occupy high positions. Females should not be objectified by men, they should not be faced with oppression and/or sexual harassment.

From an early age on, little girls should be encouraged to develop demanding and fulfilling life goals. And they should grow up in a world where men and women are equal. Not the same, but equal.

So here is what Halo is doing right on that matter:

  • You find many brave and self-confident female characters (some would say strong but to those I recommend watching Joss Whedons speech on Equality. It is old but brilliant and should be watched by every person on earth. Here is the link: Equality Now).
  • Females occupy male-dominated positions like Scientists or AI’s. Smart and sharp. Examples: Dr. Halsey or Cortana and Iona.
  • They are Spartans and Marines/Navy. They are battle hardened and fearless. Examples: Kelly, Linda, Foehammer, Polaski, Vale, Tanaka, Miranda Keyes.
  • There is no differentiation and no highlighting the fact that women fight or are in a higher up position. It’s natural and the way it is.
  • It is not about the looks of women in the Halo Universe. They are described/shown in a ‚matter of fact‘ way. And just like the men. There is no sexy connotation when Cortana is described in the books or when you see Linda and Kelly in Halo 5: Guardians.
  • The core of the Halo story is that of a man and a woman (Yes Cortana is an AI but a female one). He is a super soldier and fulfills every cliche in the book. But Cortana is not the weak and helpless girl that he has to save. That would be the other cliche. She is there to help John as a companion. And, in the end, they both help each other, they both depend on each other. They are a team.

What I like most about the issue of Equality in Halo is, that there is no issue. It is so wonderfully unimportant. Women and Men are equal in the Halo Universe and I wish for our world to reach that state very soon.
